How Will The Glamping Business Industry Look In 5 Years?

In any industry, trends come and go. These industries grasp at these trends so they can be in touch with what’s popular, we can see businesses rise and fall and some even re-invent themselves completely based on these trends. That’s why it’s important to always stay on top of what’s new, popular and unique.

Glamping has gone through a similar process, arising as a luxurious offshoot of camping in 2007 and by 2013 becoming a fully fledged way to have a holiday. Glamping has become a hit with all age groups but mainly younger adults. They’re re-discovering nature and are getting to enjoy the countryside, all with the added luxuries of WIFI, comfortable bedding and boutique furnishings.

With each passing year, the industry changes rapidly. Now, glamping holidays that create the best experience possible for their guests outweigh the ‘cheap’ glamping holidays that were once popular.

Let’s discover how the glamping industry could look in five years time.

The Effects of Covid-19 for Glamping

The pandemic was a shock to the entire world but had a particularly profound impact on business and commerce. That being said, glamping is one of the industries that grew in popularity during the pandemic.

With the easing of national restrictions across the globe alongside the continuous travel restrictions some countries face, glamping has become a popular form of holiday for many.

Studies have suggested that the outdoor setting of a glamping site lowers perceived risks when compared to traditional accommodations such as hotels. People still want a holiday and they want to have a great experience doing so, but they’re consciously taking preventative health measures to avoid risks of exposure to Covid-19.

We expect this trend to continue as more and more people book holidays in their own country rather than abroad, as well as more glamping destinations being opened in Britain.

Glamping VS Camping

The pandemic is not the only reason why glamping has risen in popularity. It has been in an upward trend for some time, while simultaneously, camping has stagnated in popularity. Now, this does not mean that camping is dying. According to Google Trends, camping goes through a yearly peak in the summer while waning interest in the later seasons.

However, the long term implications for this is that glamping is set to continue growing and growing. A study by Grand View Research suggested that the global glamping industry is expected to be worth $5.41billion by 2028.

The largest demographic of glampers are between ages 18-32. They’re more inclined to glamping rather than camping due to the luxury amenities that glamping gives you. WIFI connection, electricity, private bathrooms and luxury add-ons are all features that the largest demographic seek.

Not only this, but Grand Review also suggests that older demographics (33-50) are expected to expand massively by 2028. This begins to call into question whether the glamping industry will overtake camping. In the next 5 years, most likely not, but we’re regularly seeing camping sites differentiating themselves by offering a glamping option for guests.

Food for thought?

Glampings Return On Investment?

The return on investment for glamping is already high. Even with the costs such as the land, glamping pods themselves, appliances and site activities, if you are able to gain a successful flow of customers then you can expect a high return on investment from glamping. You’ll often see sites make a return within two and a half years and begin to make a profit after.

With the current popularity of glamping, you could expect the return on investment to stay at a relatively stable level for the foreseeable future. Although, you can expect to see more people setting up glamping sites, which may lead to a saturation in the market.

However, if you’ve got the right glamping unit, you can stand out from the crowd and rise above your competitors.
